The lot swore before the area assistant county commissioner James Nyegenye that they had stopped brewing illicit liquor for legitimate businesses as alternative to earn livelihoods.

Confirming the incident after pardoning the reformed brewers at his office in Tala town on Friday, Nyegenye said the lot surrendered due to an extensive crackdown on illicit brew and its traders by security apparatus in the entire Matungulu Sub-county.

He said the crackdown targets notorious brewers.

"During a public baraza in the area, we got a list of those who trade in illicit brew in the sub-county. Ten out of the twenty-eight have come forward to declare that they have stopped brewing, eighteen others are yet to," Nyegenye said.

Nyegenye said the reformed brewers should venture into other businesses or find alternative ways of earning their livelihoods legitimately.

"The government offers Uwezo,Youth, Women Enterprise Development and, National Government Affirmative Action funds, among others that help locals," he added.

Some of the reformed brewers interviewed by this writer said they were done with brewing and will change for the better.

"I have realized that the business isn't doing the community any good. I'm now intending to start a small scale farming and plant 'sukuma wiki' to enable me earn something," Rosalia Mbula said.

Another reformed brewer, Cosmus Kioko, urged those still doing the business to reform.
