Two Maseno students on Wednesday night were attacked by a gang of men at Nyawita while going back to their hostels at around midnight.
The two, who are said to be a couple, were reportedly from browsing on a free Wi-Fi at TB Hall at the university when an armed gang came out of the blue and ordered them to surrender their phones and a laptop.
The male student identified as Evans Maloba who is a third-year student of Education is said to have jumped in to save the situation, by fighting the gang of two after they threatened to take her girlfriend.
The students surrendered all their belongings but unfortunately, the assaultive gang never got satisfied.
“One of them grabbed my hand and pulled me towards his body. They ordered Evans to run or they could chop his body,” said Mercy, the female student.
Instead, Evans grabbed a stone and hit the thug with a machete in the face. He then forced the hostage taker into freeing the girl.
“Evans told me to run fast. I screamed as loud as I could for help. When people arrived, the thugs had escaped with our gadgets,” she added.
The agonistic boyfriend who is currently admitted to Russia Hospital in Kisumu, succumbed deep cuts on his upper limbs as he tried to fight back.
Students who reside outside the school have been prevalently attacked by thugs for a good number of times now and have been appealing fir action from the university management.
