The incident happened on Friday in Raganga village, Kisii County.

Lawrence Gichana is accused of signing a marriage agreement with a man, Clinton Orero, to marry his niece, only identified as Moraa, who dropped out of school at class 6 early this term.

Confirming the incident, area Nyumba Kumi official, Antony Okeyo, said the man was arrested for being part of the illegal marriage.

“Moraa is underage and she should not get married because she dropped out of school. Her uncle didn’t report the matter to police or the local chief but he went ahead and forced her to enter into marriage with a man who is above her age,” said Okeyo.

He said Gichana will be arraigned in court on Monday to be charged for being an accessory to an illegal marriage.

“Parents or guardians should ensure minors are taken to school and not forcing them into marriages. Gichana will be charged to serve as an example to the rest of the parents in the village,” he noted.

Area assistant chief Benjamin Ayuma condemned the incident and said it is uncalled for.

He said illegal marriages will not be condoned in his location.
