The 2019 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will kick off on Friday with the opening game featuring hosts Egypt against Zimbabwe.
National soccer team Harambee Stars is one of the 24 teams set to feature in this year’s edition, having qualified for the first time since 2004 in Tunisia.
Kenya is in group C, alongside Tanzania, Algeria and Senegal.
Harambee Stars open their campaign on Sunday against Algeria, at 11PM East African time. But how much will Harambee Stars get from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) if they win this year’s tournament?
In April, goal.com reported that CAF had set aside a total of $14.2 million which is equivalent to Sh1.42 billion to be shared between the best eight teams at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, in the form of prize money.
According to the report, if a team gets knocked out at the quarter-final stage, such a country will be rewarded with $800,000 (Sh80 million).
The beaten semi-finalists who contest the third-place play-off will share $4m, with each getting $2m (Sh200 million).
The winner will be awarded $4.5m (Sh450 million) with the second team pocketing $2.5m (Sh250 million).
That means Harambee Stars stands a chance of coming out of Egypt Sh450 million richer, only if they win the tournament.
