Nakuru town’s popular landmark, Kanu House, is set to be auctioned.Kenya’s oldest party is set to lose the building located around Mburu-Gichua roundabout over a bill they reportedly ower Kenya Power.
Kenya Power was allowed by the court to sell the house and recover Sh738.8 million Kanu incurred in electricity bills when it occupied the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) during retired President Daniel arap Moi’s heydays in power.
During that time Kanu was chama ya baba na mama!
The bill is said to have been incurred for a period of eight years when they operated from KICC.
Kenya Power first obtained an attachment order in August 2009, after Justice Jessie Lesiit ruled in its favour.
Efforts by Kanu’s Nakuru branch to oppose their building auctioned to recover a power bill incurred by the party’s headquarters were futile.
If the building changes ownership, it is likely to be painted afresh and maybe even given a new name.
This will be confusing to many residents who use it as a reference point to find their way in Nakuru.
Over time, Kanu house has become a favourite meeting point for the town’s visitors before they find their way in the town.
White House, another building that was a landmark in Nakuru, was recently brought down by KeNHA over reports it was on a reserved road.
