In a male dominated Kenya military, Fatuma Ahmed, an Airforce officer made history again on Friday following her promotion to Major General rank by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Two years ago, Ahmed, who joined the military in 1983, was promoted from Colonel to Brigadier, still the highest position to be held a woman by then.
After serving in Women Service Corps, she would later be promoted to Second Lieutenant in 1985 according to military records.
While making the appointment, Uhuru asked Mrs. Ahmed to continue serving as role model to young women.
"I am very proud to introduce to you, Major General Fatuma Ahmed, the first woman to serve in that position.
"I am looking forward to you so as many young woman who view you as role model,"said Uhuru.
Fundamentally, Ms. Ahmed is a graduate of the prestigious National Defence College and International Diplomacy, an associate school of University of Nairobi.
Also, in the year 2000, she went through Kenya Defence College having attained a diploma from Strathmore University.
Following her promotion, she will now serve as assistant Chief of Defence Forces, officer in charge of personnel and operations.
The changes, which may have been informed by impending retirement of General Samson Mwathethe, saw Lt. General Robert Kibochi being promoted to Vice Chief if Defence Forces.
Major General Francis Ogolla took over as service commander, Kenya Air-force from Samuel Thuita who would later be nominated as ambassador by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
In the Kenya Army, Lt. General Walter Ruira tool over from Kibochi. Ahmed could now be best suited to replace Ogolla, should he exit KDF.
