At least 16 people are feared dead in Pokot South after they were reportedly buried with landslides on Friday night, reports have emerged.
Speaking to the Standard on phone, Sondany Location chief Joel Bulal said 12 people were buried alive in the Nyarkulian area while four others in Parua area due to landslide triggered by heavy rains.
The administrator said more people could be trapped in the affected areas, with hundreds of livestock also feared to have died in the process.
He said that search and rescue operations are still ongoing but did not issue any statement with regard to the progress so far.
Reports indicate that some of the areas affected include Tamkal Secondary School in which boys dorm was swept away.
A bridge at Chapera has also been swept away. Penon, Nyarkulian in Pokot South constituency is said to be affected heavily.
Governor John Longanyapuo is yet to issue a statement. West Pokot region is currently experiencing heavy downpours, like many other arid and semi-arid areas.
In October, goverment spokesperson Col (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna said over 29 people had been killed by floods.
