The workers were protesting an order by police officers to close down their businesses on grounds that they don't have valid licences.

One of the workers identified as Justine Nyabuto said police officers have been storming their place of work demanding for bribes.

"Police officers demand bribes from us before we can go on with our work. We don't pay tax to police officers but, county government of Kisii. We took to the streets because our rights are being violated by rogue police officers," said Nyabuto.

Area Assistant County Commissioner, Ndong'a Nanok said the protesters were dispersed after they stormed his office.

"The protesters refused to be addressed when they arrived at my office. Police officers had to shoot in the air to disperse them," he said.

Ndong'a warned residents against unlawful protests saying businesses should be done as stipulated in the law.

He said soapstone workers should have licences before operating.
