The Kiambu County Government lead by Governor Ferdinand Waititu and his wife Susan Ndung'u on Tuesday evening held a charity Christmas tree lighting ceremony. The ceremony was held at the county headquarters in Kiambu town.
In a video posted on Waititu's Facebook page, Ndung'u said the festive season is a time for mothers to celebrate their motherhood. She also challenged mothers to share the Christmas cheer with the less fortunate.
The office of the first lady in collaboration with the department of social services had picked 12 children homes from each sub-county to benefit from the Christmas donations.
"We sampled 12 deserving children homes each from every sub-county where we shall be able to give them some Christmas donations and embrace the spirit of Christmas," said Mrs Ndung'u.
She urged residents in the county to sacrifice and share what they have with others during this Christmas season.
"We must do good by sacrificing our time and resources to share with others. As said, one good hand deserves the other," she added.
On his part, Governor Waititu noted that his administration decided not to purchase a Christmas tree and instead used the funds to buy foodstuffs for the needy children.
"Why buy a Christmas tree when you can decorate a live one? Rather than spend an exorbitant amount of money to buy a Christmas tree, I channelled my donations and those of corporate and individual wellwishers towards buying foodstuffs and blankets for needy children in 12 children homes in Kiambu," posted Waititu.
