However, in Kenya, as many can tell you things have not been rosy economically this year going by the rising cost of living compounded by heavy taxation.

In fact, speaking to a section of Thika residents many will tell you that they are contemplating spending much of the festive season indoors.

"I have no plans of travelling to my rural home in Nyeri this Christmas because this year has been very tough for me financially. I have already made it clear to my family that this year we will have our Christmas here," John Waweru, a taxi driver based at Engen area in Thika said on Monday.

Martha Wambui who sells second hand clothes at Makongeni also said that unless a 'miracle' happens, she has no prospects of travelling to her rural home in Gatundu South.

So with this state of affairs, how can one still spend their festive season memorably while within Thika and Kiambu County in general?

Well, Kiambu County is fortunately endowed with an array of natural tourist attractions that only cost one as little as Sh100. We enumerate some of these places below.

1.Fourteen Falls

The scenic falls are found along River Athi that forms the border between Kiambu and Machakos counties.

To visit the natural tourist attraction, adults and children only have to part with Sh100 and Sh50 respectively. While here, one can enjoy an array of enjoyable activities like nature walks, photography, boat rides among others.

2. Chania Falls

As the name suggests, the falls are found along River Chania just adjacent to Blue Post Hotel. The area surrounding the falls is ideal for camping, bird watching, picnic among other breathtaking activities.

3. Keraita Forest

The natural scenery is part of Aberdare Forest Complex and is perfect for those who enjoy a serene environment, bird watching and nature walks.

4. Mt Kilimambogo National Park

The park is located a stone-throw away from the conspicuous Fourteen Falls. While at this park managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service, you can watch and even take photos of various wild animals that includes buffaloes, hyenas, leopards, warthogs, birds to mention but a few.
