It is a sigh of relief to farmers in Uasin Gishu county after Export Trading Company Inputs Kenya Limited (ETG) agreed to sell fertilizers to them at Sh3,000 per 50-kilogram bag.
Speaking after holding an all-day meeting with the farmers at Kenmosa grounds in Eldoret on Saturday, former Uasin Gishu gubernatorial aspirant Zedekiah Bundotich alias Buzeki said the move will save farmers from being exploited by cartels.
“As farmers from the county, we have signed a MoU with ETG and we have agreed that the company will supply us with DAP fertilizers at a price of Sh3,000 per bag with immediate effect,” Buzeki said.
The current price of fertilizers at the leading wholesalers in Eldoret town are between Sh4,000 and Sh4,500.
The MoU with ETG is a welcome move to farmers who were until recently staring at a bleak planting season.
According to Buzeki, the company has over 30,000 bags of fertilisers at their Eldoret stores and a ship carrying 100,000 bags fertilizers is expected in the course of next month.
“We also agreed that the said company will also buy maize from farmers at a price of Sh1,900 per 90 kg bag,” revealed the billionaire businessman who is also the Chemelil Sugar Company board chairman.
It is only recently that the Strategic Food Reserves (SFR) chairman Noah Wekesa announced that the government had not imported subsidized fertilizers leaving farmers at a stalemate not knowing what to do.
Farmers were purchasing the subsidized fertilizers for as low as Sh1,500 per 90-kilogram bag.
