Police in in Homa Bay County are investigating an incident where a man allegedly committed suicide, reportedly after his girlfriend turned down marriage proposal.
Stephen Mboya reportedly committed suicide in Lake Victoria after his girlfriend only identified as Achieng' rejected his proposal at the last minute.
According to Komuoyo Sub Location Assistant Chief Duncan Odhiambo, the deceased who had threatened to commit suicide, did it right in front of his friends at Pier Beach.
The administrator said that the group of people thought that he was joking, only for him to dash into the lake and drown himself, in Suba North Sub County.
“Residents did not take him seriously when he threatened to kill himself. But they came to believe him when his body had sunk into the water,” he told the Standard.
His friends at the beach said that he had repeatedly raised the issue with them, some of whom told him to leave the woman and seek another, an advise he rejected.
“He was unhappy because the lady he wanted to marry was not co-operating,” said George Otieno.
They added that he shouted that they will meet with the woman in heaven in the later days.
County Director of Disaster Management Eliud Onyango said that the body was retrieved by a team of divers and fishermen and taken to Homa Bay Referral Hospital morgue.
