The boy reportedly hanged himself at his uncle's house on Sunday, after his mother accused him of stealing the product from residents.

The incident was confirmed by Wamumu Location Chief Godfrey Mithamo.

The administrator said that the 13-year-old boy was found hanging from a rope at David Njogu's house.

This is after the mother went ahead to castigate him over poor performance in school, reports Citizen Digital.

His aunt Sylvia Wangui said that residents had initially reported the boy to his mother, accusing him of stealing their rice while in the company of a friend.

He then went away, only to be found dead at the uncle's rented house, 500 metres from his mother's house.

However, Mr Njogu said that he left the boy sleeping in the house on Sunday morning before being informed that he had taken his own life.

The body of the deceased was taken to the Kerugoya Referral Hospital morgue pending an autopsy test.
