They say politics is all about interests and this could be explained by a classic case of Dr Bonnie Khalwale, the former Kakamega senator and now the lead campaigner of DP William Ruto.

In 2017, Dr Khalwale backed Raila Odinga's presidential bid with their team losing albeit controversially to President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP William Ruto in a closely contested election.

At a rally before the elections, Khalwale questioned DP Ruto's source of wealth, insisting that the country's second in command should be investigated for alleged theft of public resources.

"If Auditor General Robert Ouko is given an opportunity to investigate, I know someone will be in for trouble. If Ouko gets that chance, Ruto will not explain how he managed to build Sh1.2 billion house in Sugoi," Khalwale said.

He added: "Ruto, given the salary he gets, cannot be able to explain how he acquired Dolphin Hotel in Mombasa. Given his salary, he cannot tell us how he acquired four helicopters within a short period of time. This is theft."

For some time now, Ruto has defended his source of wealth but has often refused to disclose his net worth during the various media interviews he has attended in the past.

Dr Khalwale, the Ford Kenya Deputy Party Leader, has now emerged as one of the close ally of the DP and the two often join hands in hitting back at Raila Odinga's team. Khalwale has also maintained that no Luhya can be president without working with other communities.

Dr Ruto is among the lead presidential candidates and has focused his forays in the vote-rich Western Kenya, a region that has traditionally backed ODM leader Raila Odinga.
