Ainapkoi Member of Parliament William Chepkut has appealed to the national government to suspend importation of subsidized fertilizers and buy maize at Sh3,600 per sack from Sh2,300 offer recently released by the Strategic Food Reserve (SFR) and approved by the Cabinet.
Speaking to the journalist in Eldoret on Saturday, Chepkut said that Uasin Gishu Kenya Farmers Association (KFA) meeting that was held a week ago had suggested that the national government foregoes fertilizer subsidy and reallocate money to the buying of maize at a high price.
“I want him (President Kenyatta) to take charge and suspend immediately the importation of subsidised fertilizer and let money allocated for the subsidy be reallocated to the buying of maize at Sh3,600 per sack,” Chepkut said
The first-time MP further said that farmers have gone through a rigorous farming process and it’s the responsibility of the government to commensurate them by hiking price offered on maize to make farming profitable and improve the economic standard of the region.
Last week the Cabinet approved the FGR's Sh2,300 offer of maize to be bought by the national government from farmers.
Nevertheless, farmers rejected the price arguing that the cost of production is too high in comparison with the profit outcome.
