Former Kakamega Senator Dr Boni Khalwale has asked a section of former Mt Kenya politicians not to mistake “demonstration of intent to mean campaigning.”
Speaking exclusively to Hivisasa on Wednesday, Khalwale said though he and other like-minded politicians have made political statements in the recent past, it shouldn't be seen as if they are campaigning.
“I want to agree with what they are saying that it is too early to campaign,” said the former Senator who has since declared his support for Deputy President William Ruto’s 2022 presidential bid.
However, he said that there is no law within the Constitution that prevents anyone from expressing their support for a particular candidate in 2022.
“As we wait for the right time which is, by the way, a period of 21 days to the date of elections which will be on the ninth of August 2022, nothing in the Constitution stops anyone from indicating his/her intention in 2022. You can show intention by association or by making political announcement that in 2022 I will go for such,” he added.
The former Kakamega Senator spoke shortly after a press conference by Mt Kenya ex-lawmakers among them Martha Karua, Peter Kenneth, Maina Kamanda and Kilemi Mwiria.
The four who were also joined by Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu said that it is too early to start politicking about who will succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.
They warned that continued succession politics is likely to erode the gains Kenyans are enjoying from the handshake between Uhuru and opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Over the last two weeks, succession politics have increased as pro-Ruto brigade hit out at immediate former Jubilee Party Interim Vice Chairman David Murathe.
Murathe is opposed to Ruto’s 2022 presidency.
