A section of local leaders in Kisii County has reacted after the recent push by to MPs increase their allowances.
The leaders led by Bogeka ward MCA Charles Mochoge protested the MPs clamour for more pay.
Mochoge said the MPs should be ashamed of hiking allowances.
"I condemn the MPs in the 12th Parliament with the strongest terms possible for hiking allowances yet poor Kenyans are suffering in villages. The MPs could have instead prioritized development in their respective areas," he said at Matongo market in his ward on Tuesday evening.
According to the ODM allied MCA, corruption won't end in this country because the MPs themselves are after money.
Mochoge's remarks were echoed by Tom Nyambeka, former Bomariba ward MCA during the 2017 polls who accused the MPs of being money-minded.
He regretted that poor Kenyans will continue being subjected to paying huge taxes as the MPs take home huge allowances.
"Kenyans should expect nothing to do with development from the 12th Parliament because the MPs have preferred their stomachs. I strongly oppose the MPs move to hike housing allowances," said Nyambeka.
Speaking at a different function at Nyamerako, Kisii Jubilee youth leader Isaac Motari slammed the lawmakers for burdening Kenyans.
"It is sad the MPs are not bothered about the struggle Kenyans undergo to pay taxes. The MPs' decision to hike allowances is unacceptable and uncalled for," he stated.
Benjamin Kirera, a trader at Daraja Mbili appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene and ensure the MPs do not continue earning the huge allowances.
"I hope that Mr Kenyatta intervenes. The MPs were elected to serve Kenyans not earn huge allowances to benefit themselves and their families," said Kirera.
The 416 legislators last month pocketed Sh2.25 million each as house allowance.
