Two students drowned in River Yala, Siaya County on Saturday afternoon.
The two were identified as Derrick Auka, a Third Year student at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, and his friend only identified as Sharon.
The late Sharon was a student at the Bondo Technical Training Institute.
According to Bondo Town Chief Walter Omollo, the incident happened at around 3pm as the two were taking pictures.
“We received information that two students were at the river taking photos when one of them slipped and fell into the waters,” Omollo was quoted by the Standard.
According to the local administrator, Auka drowned after he jumped into the river to save Sharon, but was overwhelmed by the raging waters
Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology Vice Chancellor Stephen Agong' said the two drowned while taking selfies.
"Quite unfortunate indeed. The two students; one male from Jaramogi and the other a female from Bondo Technical, were taking a selfie at the river bank when the incident occurred," Prof Agong' is quoted by the Nation.
The search for the bodies of the two students is on-going.
