A Nairobi-based tycoon was arrested on Monday August 20, at his home in Kanamai, Kilifi County.
According to the detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) who arrested him, Mr Praful Kumar who allegedly wanted to bribe Governor Sonko had huge sums of money amounting to Sh5 million in cash.
Confirming the arrest, EACC Lower Coast Regional Head George Ojowi said that Mr Praful Kumar had taken Sh1 million to Governor Sonko’s home in Kanamai.
“EACC has arrested Nairobi businessman Praful Kumar for offering a bribe of Ksh.1 million to Nairobi Governor Michael Mbuvi Sonko to facilitate approval of his hotel under construction.The County Government of Nairobi had stopped the construction of the hotel on 16th August 2018,” said EACC.
Mr Praful Kumar had called Governor Sonko and pleaded to bribe him so that he allows the illegal construction of a hotel in Gigiri.
On Thursday August 16, the construction on the building was stopped by the county government of Nairobi.
Mr Praful Kumar will be arraigned in court on Wednesday August 22, to face corruption and other related charges.
