Practices like chasing owls away when they sing near one's compound to avoid misfortunes among others.

In the olden days, as well as some areas today, people believed/believe that cocks should crow only early in the morning and during daytime and not at night.

Mzee Muli Kioko from Kathiani sub-county in Machakos county explains why roosters which crowed at night in Kambaland were slaughtered immediately.

Mzee Muli, 69, says such cocks brought misfortunes to families.

"A cock should not crow at night because it will bring about misfortunes to its owner and family. And that is what I grew up believing and seeing. I practised it too" he said in an interview with hivisasa.com.

"We used to kill such cocks immediately because we were afraid something bad might happen," Milu added.

According to Muli, if they didn't slaughter the cockerels, the unknown would happen.

He, however, admits that today it is hard to find people among the Kamba community believing in the practice.

"Sometimes it's like you become a slave of what you believe in. Today, it's hard to see people practice some cultures and believes but they still live well. During our days, if you don't kill such cocks people used to get sick, died or had fatal accidents," Muli noted while also pointing out that although such things are not practised much today, he knows of people who still practice the same.
