Whether it is a “Chama” group, a professional organization or a poetry association, you need to belong to an organization. To grow in your field of expertise, you need others. No man is an island. To put it more aptly, if you want to go faster, walk alone. But if you want to go far, walk with others. Here are a few reasons why you need to join an organization.

1. A chance to compete/improve craft

You cannot compete with yourself. You can only compete with others. A healthy competition will not only put you on your toes but it will also improve your craft. There is a saying which goes,” A person who does not travel says his mother’s cooking is the best in the World.” This is because he does not have the chance to compare his mother’s cooking with another. The same thing applies to he or she who does not belong to a group or an organization. Belonging to an organization accords you a chance to compare notes with other professionals in the same field. You get to learn new things.

1.Influence policies

When people speak with one voice as a group, their speech carry more weight compared to a person who speaks as an individual. When you belong to an organization, your voice can be heard louder. This can give you (your organization) the power to influence policies and legislation. Organizations such as trade unions, worker’s association have the power to influence policies to lean towards the interest of their members. A feat a professional cannot achieve when he “walks” alone.

2. Less idle time

When you are an active member of several groups, you will have less time to stay idle. You will be busy attending meetings, boot camps and other activities organized by the group. You will have a busy schedule and have little or no time to idle around. An idle mind, as they say, is the devil’s workshop.

3. Lighten your burden

Another reason why you should join an association is that you will have people who will share in your suffering. When you have a problem, be it financial or family issues, you will have some people who will come to your aid. Some will offer you emotional support and/or financial support during those trying times. This will lighten your burden. But when you are a lone-ranger, you will have to shoulder the whole burden alone and it might overwhelm you.

4. Exclusive deals

When you belong to an organization, you will enjoy deals which are exclusive for members only. You also enjoy elaborate credit facilities. Take a Golf Club as an example. When you register and become a member, you get to enjoy cheaper rates compared to someone who is not a registered member.

5. A chance to network

Belonging to an organization gives you the golden chance to network with other like-minded people. You will be able to form new relationships, make new friends and enrich your contact list. Why is this important? Well, you never know what the future holds. These new friends might open for you more opportunities, especially when your career path is spiraling downwards. They will give you heads up if and when there is a new job opening somewhere. Having friends will also make you feel like there are people out there who care for you. Like you have another family.

So if you like reading, join a book club. If you want to grow in your career line, join a professional organization. Join your local Chama. Take active roles in Church and in the organization that you belong to.
