A number of country's top political leaders on Tuesday evening converged for the late legendary footballer Joe Kadenge’s burial fundraiser to offset accrued burial expenses.
This follows earlier media reports that the family of Kadenge required at least Sh5 Million to meet the funeral costs.
It has now emerged that President Uhuru Kenyatta, opposition leader Raila Amollo Odinga and Nairobi governor each contributed a whooping one million shillings.
Other top politicians present in the fundraiser include Musalia Mudavadi who offered Sh300,000, a full day chopper ride to ferry the casket home and a bull to feed the mourners. COTU Francis Atwoli contributed Sh500,000 while Nairobi woman representative Esther Passaris offered Sh50,000.
Kadenge died on Sunday, July 7 at the Meridian Hospital after a concerted battle with a stroke. The soccer legend, who is popularly associated with “Kadenge na mpira” slogan, passed on at the age of 84.
He is regarded as the country's finest ever footballer who first played for the Maragoli United, scoring the fastest ever goal for the Kenyan Premier League competitions.
He also played for the then-popular Abaluyha United, helping them to lift the Kenya Premier League trophy in the year 1966.
