Emerging details indicate that over 100 youths from Othaya in Nyeri County have been recruited into the Somali-based Al-Shabaab terror group.

Police say that the group is being recruited by two men who were recently trained  in Somalia, and have been sent back to recruit more youths into the group.

Speaking during the Madaraka Day celebrations in Othaya on Saturday, Nyeri County Commissioner David Kipkemei said that the police are pursuing the two suspects.

He added that the two are working in collaboration with others from other counties, saying that the police already have the details of the suspects in question.

"We are aware they are being recruited by people from other counties and we have all the names. The two men who returned from Somalia should be informed that they are on the governments' radar," he was quoted by the Standard.

The police boss as well said that his officers are combating the reemergence of the Mungiki sect which known for extortion, saying that his officers are dealing with the situation.

He said that they are relying on intelligence to return the sect to rest after years of disappearance, further calling upon locals to offer information that can be of help.

"We have information about the criminal gangs coming back to the county and we will not allow these dangerous sects to terrorise the people. There will be a serious intelligence-led operation flush out members of the gang," he added.
