For the last three weeks, leaders from Gusii region have been backing the powerful minister for presidential seat although he has remained non committal.

Among those advocating for his candidature include Governor John Nyagarama, Senator Okong'o Mogeni and his Kisii counterpart Sam Ongeri among others.

But in a phone call on Sunday, the second term MP said the interior boss is keen to serve as Deputy Prime Minister in the next government.

"He is a performer and is keen to unite Gusii leaders. I don't think he has reached that level of going for president at least for now given our political dynamics.

"However, I am sure he's waiting for referendum just like us. We are expecting a parliamentary system of government and he's keen to serve as DPM."

In the grand coalition government, President Uhuru Kenyatta and Musalia Mudavadi served as Raila Odinga's DPMs. Raila is keen to have parliamentary system.

On Friday, Dr Matiang'i remained tight lipped over his next move when he toured Nyamira. A host of leaders who accompanied him rallied for his presidential bid.
