On Saturday, Deputy President William Ruto dragged the name of veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga into the fake gold scam that has gripped the Kenyan public.
In Trans Nzoia accompanied by his henchmen, he accused Raila of exporting conmanship from politics to business.
"These people who are political conmen, they are now business conmen so that they have looked for fake gold. They boarded planes here and went to Dubai and did what they did. They should leave the president out of this and answer the questions themselves, " DP Ruto said.
In spite of the name of President Uhuru Kenyatta being mentioned in that recorded phone conversation, Ruto opted to attack Raila and Matiang'i.
This was a clearly a political move that he made.
Attacking President Kenyatta would have ignited a backlash from the Kikuyu nation whom the DP hopes will vote for him in 2022.
Antagonising the president would have been downright stupid as he expects the president to endorse him in 2022.
Dr Ruto sees Raila and Matiang'i as political adversaries who he must attack at every turn and soil to improve his prospects.
The tension between Ruto and Matiang'i is well documented and one can understand why the DP called out the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government.
Politics is all about painting your opponents in the worst light possible in the hope that doing this will gain you some mileage.
