The charter once gazetted will give powers to the Municipal Board to manage Eldoret towns' affairs.

Mandago signed the charter in pursuant of Section 9(1) of Urban Areas and Cities Act. The Act gives powers the county government to confer the status of a municipality only on resolution of the county assembly.

The town must also meet some set criteria according to section 9(3).

Some criteria according to Section  9(3) are; a town should have a population of at least 250,000 according to the previous census, should have integrated development plan, has enough space for expansion, should have a capacity for functional and effective waste disposal, and many more.

In a post on his official Facebook page, Mandago said the move was a major step to make Eldoret a city since according to the laws, only municipal Board can request the new status of the town.

"The move paves way the process of making Eldoret a City, since the according to the law, it is the board that launch request for the status. After gazettement of the charter, a Municipal Board will be sworn into office," posted Mandago

"The board will assist in many aspects of the city management which includes the actualization of Government's big 4 agendas within the city," he added.
