Nine Months since the Solai Dam tragedy that claimed up to 48 lives and rendered several people homeless and nursing injuries, the victims of the tragedy are still lamenting over compensation.
Emotions ran high on Monday when Senate committees leadership visited the area.
The victims said owners of the dam took advantage of their poor state to exploit them.
Led by John Mwangi, the victims also took an issue with some administrators whom they accused of being 'pocketed'.
“Most of the genuine victims were not compensated since the administrators messed up with the compensation lists inserting names of people who were not victims,” said Mwangi.
Despite the narrative that victims have been compensated, the script is different on the ground with women emotionally crying for their rights.
They are also hitting out at the government for failing to ensure the Senate report on the tragedy.
Valentine Mursoi, who was running a business in the area, said the tragedy turned her life upside down.
The tearful mother of two said the situation has left her sick.
Her appeal is to the government to ensure that all those victims whose health was messed up due to the dam tragedy are taken care of.
“I am suffering since I sustained injuries during the tragedy and I have not received any help to restore my health,” she said.
Catherine Nabonyo,27, said she received no compensation despite her shop being swept away by the dam water.
“I was running a shop here which was swept away during the tragedy. Sad enough is that during compensation I was told that my shop was small and therefore no need for compensation,” said Nabonyo.
Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior, who chaired the Ad hoc committee on Solai Dam tragedy, said he will ensure the report is implemented.
“Why are we treating Patel as a superior? The law cannot be negotiated and we shall not relent until the report is fully implemented,” said Mutula.
