Travelling is supposed to be an exciting adventure, but it often ends up being a source of misery for many Kenyans when not planned well and misfortune strikes. Thankfully, we have gathered 10 great tips by talking to people who plan their trips by bus professionally and always enjoy being on the road.
1. Book bus online, in advance
Instead of going to the bus station to book your bus ticket, save the matatu fare, the hassle and time by securely getting your ticket online at BuuPass. There is no extra cost when using the online booking process. If you decide to cancel your trip, you can sell it to someone else.
2. Arrive early
To avoid the commotion of last-minute hurrying, ensure you arrive at the bus station at least 30 minutes before departure time. By leaving home early, you reduce chances of forgetting to carry useful things on the journey. If you arrive late, chances are the bus would have long left. And that will ruin your travel plans.
3. Keep valuables close
If you have not been a victim, you have definitely heard of stories where travellers lose their valuables during a bus journey. Not everyone in the bus has good intentions. Some people have thieving tendencies, and won’t hesitate to pick your phone or laptop bag if they notice that they are not being guarded. Avoid losing your treasured items by having them in a small bag, which should always be with you.
4. Select the best seat
The other advantage of booking online via BuuPass and in advance is that you’re allowed to choose your preferred seat. When travelling during the day, it would be great to choose a seat next to the window, so that you enjoy the great scenery along the way. Unless you like bumpy rides, which are often dangerous, it is wise to choose a seat that is not too close to the back. Anywhere from the middle towards the front is great.
5. Carry essentials
When travelling during the day, carrying a camera or any capable device such as your smartphone to capture the exciting scenes and moments. In Kenya, you are likely to see wildlife when travelling, and it won’t be a bad idea to take photos of them. A night journey might require you to carry a neck pillow. Do not forget to pack enough clothes and other essentials, such as a toothbrush, towel etc to cover the duration when you will be away.
6. Watch when passengers alight
If you have a large bag that is not with you, it is a good idea to be alert when passengers alight on the way. This is because a fellow traveller may mistakenly pick your luggage and disappear with it. Be keen to see ensure your bag is safe.
7. Prepare for the weather
Before you start the journey, find out what the weather is like where you are going, and pack your clothes accordingly. If it’s too cold, you need to have plenty of heavy and warm clothes. When going upcountry during a rainy season, carrying boots would help.
8. Where to keep money
Do not make the mistake of keeping your money in one place – have it in at least two separate places. In the event of a robbery or theft, the thief would get everything if it is in one place.
9. Entertain yourself
Carry headphones and load your phone with your favourite songs so that you are entertained on the way. If you have audiobooks, the journey will seem shorter if you listen to one.
10. Meditate
Meditation is a practice which helps you develop skills such as happiness, compassion and resilience. Whether you are already a meditator or just a beginner, you will have plenty of time on a long bus ride to practise.
