Leaders from Kilifi County have asked the government to immediately transfer county land officers saying the are behind the historical land injustices facing the people of Kilifi.
Led by Kilifi North Member of Parliament Owen Baya, the leaders both from Kilifi and Malindi, were the blocking stone to the fight against land grabbing.
According to Baya, Kilifi County land officers have been collaborating with cartels to ensure that land rights of the people of Kilifi are not served.
“There is no transparency at all in our land offices. The title deeds they are issuing to the residents do not match with original parcels of land they are owning, large chunks allocated to non-residents,” he said on Thursday.
He cited an instance where locals were given titles of land that was many kilometers away from their area of residence.
Hajji Mwakio, a human rights activist, said that thousands of poor locals have been suffocating from daily eviction court orders, adding that wealthy individuals are using the court to intimidate poor residents with zero intervention from the land officers.
The activist said, “there is no public participation at all on matters to do with the land. Once all the county lands officers are relocated to create space for fresh ones, sanity, transparency and fairness will be restored in Kilifi.”
