Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has been at the forefront protecting Rift Valley residents said to be occupying the Mau Forest complex illegally.
Environment Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko recently ordered all families occupying Kenya's largest water tower to vacate and pave way for the restoration of lost forest cover through planting of more trees.
However, shortly after the government ordered for the eviction of families, a section of Rift Valley leaders led by Murkomen sprung up and defended the families telling them to stay put and never leave.
Murkomen blamed opposition chief Raia Odinga for the evictions saying the idea was hatched after the former prime minister met President Uhuru Kenyatta on March 9.
But will Murkomen succeed in this battle?
The man (Raila) who Murkomen blames for the evictions does not hold instruments of power. He does not control the police who effected evictions and torched houses of the residents illegally occupying the forest.
Any critical thinking Kenyan who knows that Raila is not in government can never roundly blame the former Langata MP for the evictions.
Deputy President William Ruto, who is a close ally of Murkomen, after all has been at the forefront championing for the protection of forests. Ruto on March 5th banned logging in Kenyan forests for 90 days.
