Residents of Geteri village, Nyakoe area in Kitutu Chache South, Kisii County were left in shock after a man divorced his wife on Thursday for allegedly being a chang’aa addict.
Andrew Kerema sent his wife, Christine Ondigo, packing on claims that she has been drinking chang’aa.
“My wife is a chang’aa addict who has been selling maize and other property to get money to satisfy her chang’aa thirst. I don’t want to see her again even if she goes to rehabilitation,” he said.
Kerema said not even police officers, elders or his parents can persuade him to accept the alcoholic wife back.
Residents said efforts by elders led by Philip Mabuka to have the couple solve the matter did not give fruits.
“We tried as elders to have the couple sit down and solve the matter but the man insisted that the wife must go. The man even threatened to kill the woman and commit suicide if we force him to bring her back,” said Mabuka.
Mabuka said the man should ensure his daughter who was left behind goes to school failure to which he will be reported to authorities.
Mabuka urged women to stop consuming chang’aa and focus on building up their families.
