On Tuesday, the powerful minister oversaw security forces eliminate Al-Shabaab terrorists who had attacked Dusit Hotel Complex in Westlands, in which over 21 people died.

And a section of leaders from Gusii now say the tough talking minister has come of age to take over from President Uhuru Kenyatta who retires in 2022.

"I have no problem with Matiang'i being president. He has been tested and passed in several aspects. Kenyans need a performer and I think he fits in that category," said Victor Swanya, a seasoned Wiper politician.

Former Kitutu Masaba MP Mwancha Okioma says Dr Matiang'i's incredible competence gives him a prime opportunity to restore the country from ethnic politics.

"The Handshake should have Matiang'i as compromise candidate not just for the sake of it but because he has delivered. I think we are now getting a liberal option as Kenyans."

Should he go for presidency, he would be the third person from Kisii community after George Anyona and Simon Nyachae who emerged third in 2002.

Dr Matiang'i has served among others, as Minister for ICT, Education and his current powerful Interior and Coordination department which plays a key role in presidency.
