The Alms House at Kivumbini, Nakuru Town East was established in 1955 to offer moral and material help to the elderly in the then larger Rift Valley Province.

More than half of the initial 5 acres parcel of land has since been grabbed with little room left for expansion.

Speaking on Thursday when he visited the home, Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui said there is a great need for having a bigger and modern facility citing cultural and lifestyle changes.

The Governor later laid a foundation stone for the facility’s expansion that he said will help the elderly have better care and company in a centralized location.

“We have been informed by the community that part of the land has been grabbed and as a county, we shall be moving with speed to reclaim the land for the expansion of the home,” said Kinyanjui.

Acting County CEC for Youth, Gender, Culture, Sports and Social Services Dr Peter Kityenya said the facility will be expanded to accommodate 30 people.

“We are committed as a county to continue with this program and we shall expand the home,” affirmed Kityenya.

The facility will also house a gym, physiotherapy centre, laundry, common room and a workshop where the elderly can offer crafts skills.

On his part, Kivumbini MCA Wilbur Onyango said the County Assembly of Nakuru will allocate necessary funds required towards establishing such homes in the County.
