The incident happened on Friday at Mokomoni, North Borabu in Nyamira County.

Witnesses said the car was spotted at a local wines and spirits shop offloading liquor.

“Locals saw the owner of the vehicle offloading liquor at a local shop selling alcohol. They teamed up and burnt the vehicles on grounds that illicit brew business must come to an end in the region,” said Albert Oroo.

Oroo said the owner of the car fled for his safety after locals threatened to set him on fire.

Area assistant chief, Simon Ogaro, urged residents not to destroy vehicles ferrying liquor but instead report to authorities.

He said the vehicle was reduced to ashes by locals who have complained of youths being rendered unproductive by alcohol each day.

He said he arrived late at the crime scene after the vehicle was torched down.

“Members of the public should engage in legal businesses to avoid being on the wrong side of the law. We want the future generation to have a vision and not alcohol consumption only turning our people to be useless and beggars in the villages,” he said.
