Haji notes that the committee’s operations are within the confines of the law.

The Garissa senator argues that the committee's mandate is supported by the relevant provisions of the constitution contrary to what some critics are saying.

Speaking during a public forum at the Kitui Multi-Purpose Training Institute on Tuesday, Senator Haji further refuted claims that the committee is engaging in futile exercises.

He said that ‘handshake’ committee has made several proposals which are aimed at spearheading unity and reconciliation.

“It is malicious for some people to claim that we are engaging in Public Relations (PR) activities,” he said.

The Garissa senator who co-chairs the handshake committee said that they have made several proposals to the president and former Prime Minister.

"Our key agenda is to come up with workable proposals that will cement unity and reconciliation,” he added.

Haji stated that the country’s governance structure, inclusivity, and electoral reforms are part of the committee’s key agenda.

The ‘handshake’ committee is currently conducting regional forums to get Kenyans and leaders views on its mandate.

The committee plans to visit all the regions across the country.

The Building Bridges committee was formed by President Kenyatta and Raila after their famous March 9 handshake.

Haji co-chairs the committee with Busia senator Amos Wako.
