US-based law scholar Prof Makau Mutua now says President Uhuru Kenyatta has really disappointed him over the war on corruption.
According to Mutua, the Head of State has failed miserably to sly the dragon of corruption despite repeatedly vowing to free Kenya from runaway graft.
"I’ve concluded – much to my chagrin – that Jubilee’s Uhuru Kenyatta is dithering on the war against corruption. The man from Gatundu has stumbled badly. He talks too much, and does too little, or next to nothing, on corruption," he remarked.
In his column published by Sunday Standard, the SUNY Distinguished Professor at SUNY Buffalo Law School wondered why Uhuru, with the powers bestowed on him by the Constitution, has hesitated to jail the corrupt, some of whom are very close to him.
"This is what I don’t know – is he afraid, or simply lacks the guts to guillotine the lords of corruption sitting next to him?" he wrote.
Mutua opined that Uhuru made a political pact with Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga so he can succeed in purge on corruption, but has failed to use the handshake to tame even his allegedly corrupt deputy William Ruto.
"In a word, the handshake hasn’t delivered the goods. Which begs the question – who between Raila and Kenyatta can change the calculus? Could it be neither?" he wondered.
During the State of The Nation address, the President said even though he was under pressure to sack senior government officials in his government facing corruption allegations, he won't use "vigilante justice" to win the war on graft.
