Kibera residents have expressed mixed reactions over the impeachment of Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi.
Majority of the residents say that Elachi did not deserve to be impeached.
In an interview on Friday, the residents faulted the MCAs for wrongly sending Elachi packing.
“I don’t think she deserved to be ousted, she has been vocal in pushing for reforms at the county assembly,” said Martin Museba, a bodabada rider at Ngumo market.
Museba said that Elachi’s leadership in the Assembly had started to transform Nairobi.
“Elachi’s impeachment is political, she did not deserve to be send packing,” Anthony Macharia said.
Macharia said that the Nairobi speaker had leadership qualities that could help governor Mike Sonko’s administration achieve development.
“This is pure politics and 2022 forces are now taking up Nairobi,” John Muchiri, a grocer at Highrise market said.
“Elachi should fight her ouster in court because it was malicious even in the manner it was done,” Tabitha Muema said.
However, a section of residents supported Elachi’s ouster. “I think her alleged arrogance made her ousted,” Steven Kariuki said.
Kariuki claimed that Elachi has not been vocal in pushing the interests of the Assembly.
The Nairobi Speaker was ousted after 103 MCAs out of 122 voted in favor of the impeachment motion.
She however got a reprieve after the Employment and Labour court issued orders stopping the County Assembly from hiring a new Speaker.
The MCAs accused Elachi of allegedly intimidating County Assembly staff and contravening House Standing Orders.
