This gives the DP an automatic candidacy and the party is expected to rally behind him when Uhuru’s term comes to the end.

Recently, the DP has been traversing different parts of the country launching projects and attending fund drives. It is now clear that the Deputy President has started preparing for 2022 presidential race and his recent movements are one of his political strategies.

Ruto has already declared his candidacy and here are two new factors which are causing the DP a headache as he prepares for the race;

Uhuru-Raila handshake

The entry of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga into the Jubilee government through the handshake has caused a lot of discomfort in DP Ruto’s political camp. After supporting Uhuru Kenyatta in 2013 and 2017, Ruto expected the support of Mt Kenya region in 2022.

However, this will not be possible if Uhuru will decide to work with Raila who is also eyeing the country's top seat. It is clear that Ruto and his political allies are not happy with the handshake.

2018 financial law.

President Uhuru Kenyatta recently signed into law the controversial 2018 Finance Bill. Kenyans have expressed their disappointment with the Jubilee administration led by the President and DP Ruto as the will have to dig down into their pockets so as to pay the increased taxes. William Ruto will, therefore, have to convince the taxpayers that things will be better if he ascends to power and what happened during President Kenyatta’s tenure was out of his control.
