The African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa (AIPCA) Nakuru branch has welcomed the calls for a referendum.
Addressing journalists in Nakuru on Wednesday, Bishop Naftaly Thuku of the AIPCA Nakuru North Diocese said changing the Constitution to benefit an individual or two will not be beneficial to the country.
Bishop Thuku argued that the proposed changes should be aimed at benefiting Kenyans and not just a few politicians.
“As a church, we support the calls for a referendum as long as it is for the interest of the common citizens. Changing the Constitution to benefit an individual or two will not help the common mwananchi in any way” said Bishop Thuku.
The Bishop, who had attended a meeting which brought together AIPCA deacons at the AIPCA Bishop Mureithi Cathedral in Nakuru town, said conducting a referendum that is aimed at benefiting only a few individuals will be a waste of tax payer’s money.
He noted that the country is already facing several challenges including the rising debt burden and corruption which should be addressed for the benefit of Kenyans.
The referendum debate is being spearheaded by opposition leader Raila Odinga who is seeking to introduce more executive slots, a move that a section of political pundits argue is aimed at benefiting specific individuals.
