Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o and the entire Nyong'o family are mourning the the demise of their mother, Mama Dorcas Owino Nyong'o.
Mama Dorcas died at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, on Tuesday where she was admitted for the last few days.
A number of leaders, and Kenyans of goodwill have sent their condolence messages to the family.
In a tweet, Deputy President William Ruto mourned Mama Dorcas as a caring, accommodating and loving mother.
"Thoughts, sympathies and prayers are with the family of Anyan'g Nyong'o following the passing on of their mother, Mama Dorcas Owino Nyong'o. She was a pillar of strength, unity, love for her family; a woman of valour and great wisdom. Mama Dorcas was accommodating, gentle and caring," the DP posted.
Opposition chief Raila Odinga and his wife Mama Ida Odinga noted that Mama Dorcas was a pillar of the Nyong'o family.
"Mama Ida Odinga and I mourn the passing of Mama Dorcas Owino Nyong'o, mother to Prof Anyan'g Nyong'o. Dorcas was a true matriarch and pillar of the Nyong'o family. She never stopped serving and guiding the family and the community she was part of despite her advancing years.
"Our family will be forever grateful for the friendship we formed that has stood the test of time. Our hearts and prayers are with the entire Nyongo clan at this moment of grief. May God grant the family the fortitude and faith to cope with the loss," he tweeted.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, vowed to stand with the Prof during the difficult moment.
"We mourn the passing of Mama Dorcas Owino Nyong'o, mother to Prof Anyan'g Nyong'o, the governor of the county of Kisumu. As a party, we stand with the Governor and his family at this moment of grief," reads a tweet by ODM Partry.
