'Women eater' is a new phrase in Kenya which emanated from an unexpected place, the High Court. Justice James Wakiaga was probably the first Kenyan to bring the male version of a 'slay queen' to the limelight while unmasking who Joseph Irungu aka Jowie was.
"The picture that emerges from the prosecution's evidence as set out herein above, and that the bail report of the accused, is that he is a male version of a slay queen. Which for lack of a better terminology, I will call a woman eater," Justice Wakiaga said when he declined to release Irungu on bail in the ongoing Monica Kimani murder case.
We all know a slay queen is a woman who is beautiful of course and expects the man she is dating to pay most of her bills. The case is the same with a 'woman eater'.
It is common to encounter slay queens and women eaters at the Kenyatta University main campus. However, these characters mainly show up during these three crucial moments at the university.
1. When the famous HELB loan has been disbursed
Some guys at the campus approach their female counterparts shortly after the disbursement of the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans so as to squander the 'sweet money'. The guys will act so nice and gentle towards such ladies who find themselves paying most of the bills. The guys will rarely cook for themselves but instead ensure they enjoy all their meals at the ladies' hostels. The guys then disappear after the money runs out, leaving the ladies with regrets.
2. The beginning of the semester
This is the time when all students are 'rich' courtesy of the pocket money they receive from their parents. During the first few weeks of the semester, some male comrades shift from their campus hostels to their girlfriend's bedsitter at Kahawa Wendani. The lady will be forced to take care of all the bills and expenses of having an extra mouth to feed, only for the guy to remember his campus room at the middle of the semester when the lady runs out money.
3. During the exam/ assignment period
Instances of students asking their fellow students for 'favours' during the exam and assignment period are very common. Some campus guys ask their girlfriends to type their assignments for them, which is time-consuming. This is despite the lady being the one taking care of most of his bills.
