Dr Matiang'i was elevated by President Uhuru Kenyatta to take charge of monitoring and communicating progress of National Government projects across the country.

On his Twitter, Matiang'i wrote:"I hosted Cabinet colleagues for an intergovernmental committee meeting to review the Drought Status and Response Report compiled by the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA)."

"The Government has put in place adequate drought mitigation measures to avert a disruption of the academic calendar and other potential effects of the dry spell in the country," he said.

Present in the meeting were Amina Mohammed (Education), Najib Balala (Tourism), Mwangi Kiunjuri (Agriculture), Samson Chelgui (Water) among others.

While all ministers are committee members in the powerful sub committee, Matiang'i is assisted by Finance boss Henry Rotich with AG Kihara Kariuki and Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua being members.

His elevation brought jitters in DP William Ruto's camp with his handlers accusing State House of using the position to undermine the DP.

But in an interview with the BBC, Ruto down played claims that Matiang'i is more powerful than him, insisting that he directly reports to him.

"He chairs a cabinet sub committee in which he reports directly to the president and me," said the DP.
