Uasin Gishu County Commander Johnston Ipara has refuted claims by a section of the public that police officers work with gangsters to terrorize people.
Speaking to the press in Eldoret town on Tuesday, Ipara said the mandate of the police is to protect residents, ensure they stay in a conducive environment.
“It sad that some people think that police officers stay and eat with thieves. This is not true since we are human beings who own property and are paid with the government," he said.
Mr Ipara maintained that his officers are disciplined and guided by the rule of law. He accused unnamed people of spreading propaganda.
“From the recent arrests we have made of people stealing cows and cars is there any policeman that was arrested? Let stop this nonsense," he said.
Ipara, however, blamed residents for harbouring criminals, arguing that members of the community have not cooperated fully.
He said this has led to increased insecurity cases in the Uasin Gishu. He asked residents to report criminals for action all the time.
His statement comes at the time the Director of Criminal Investigations has intensified crackdown on rogue criminals across the country.
