Interior CS Fred Matiang’i on Friday unveiled the first-ever elite all-female Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team in Ngong.
This is the first of its kind not only in Kenya but also entire sub-Saharan Africa. The team, which comprises of 48 commando office has been unveiled at a time when Kenyan is seeking to improve its security detail.
The officers are drawn from different units of the Administration Police Service. The commandos underwent five months of physical and combat drilling before they were unveiled.
Matiang'i, who spoke during the unveiling of the commandos, said that the government is committed to the fight against crime before President Uhuru Kenyatta completes his second and final term in power.
The CS said that the government has put in place several measures to ensure levels of crimes reduce in different parts of the country as well as the fight against terror bears fruits at the end of the day.
“What we have witnessed today gives us confidence that we have the capacity to protect our people. We can rest assured that we have more officers who can undertake intricate security operations," he said, as quoted by Standard.
The officers were trained on how to handle different weapons including IEDs and explosive during this period. The CS further said that the government is planning to look into the affairs of the Special Forces.
