ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi was in Saturday hosted at Gatanga for eight hours in a secret meeting by President Uhuru Kenyatta's two close friends.
The meeting at Jubilee Vice Chairman David Murathe came few hours after that attended a funeral to renowned businessman Muchai Githu.
But the presence of Uhuru's cousin Kungu Muigai, a spokesman of the Kenyatta family, has sent tongues wagging across the country.
Mr Muigai is among trusted lieutenants of the president and is often credited for political decisions along with Murathe in Uhuru Kenyatta's kitchen cabinet.
When contacted, Murathe confirmed the meeting but played down speculations over succession battles in 2022.
"I was then left with these foreigners who have visited our village and I slaughtered for them as a good host. In fact, I was in China and I brought my trip back by one day to make it for the funeral.
"I drove from the airport straight to Gatanga. I had no clue that he (Mudavadi) was coming but it is true we spent a lot of time together. You know I went to school with him. Mudavadi, who played a key role in Raila Odinga's 2017 campaigns, has since announced his intentions to succeed the president in 2022.
Interestingly, the meeting comes under two weeks after the president insisted that his 2022 choice could shock many people, casting doubts of possibility to back DP William Ruto.
In 2013, President Uhuru Kenyatta beat Musalia Mudavadi just months after having promised to back him in the elections as an alternative due to ICC cases he was facing.
