Kenyatta University has been closed indefinitely following riots by students.
The Tuesday memo directed students to vacate the institution premises with immediate effect.
“In view of the foregoing, all students are required to vacate the university premises immediately,” stated the Vice-Chancellor Prof Paul K. Wainaina.
The university apologised to affected businesses and the general public stating that the violence witnessed was supported by just a few students.
Learners engaged police in running battles from Monday and Tuesday prompting the closure.
"The university management apologizes to members of the public who were inconvenienced by the few unruly students who chose violence instead of engaging directly with the university administration through dialogue,” read the statement.
The students are reportedly said to have protested a directive requiring them to use footbridges when crossing over.
“For purposes of safety and security, all pedestrians including students and staff are expected to use the footbridges at the Nyayo Hostels located on our main campus as well as on the Thika superhighway," the directive read.
Kenyatta University Students Association (KUSA) leader Joshua Ayika, said the students are demanding the resignation of the VC decrying that his regime has seen fees go up.
