Being driven by a passion for beauty and the push to better his financial status, Mwimali Hakeem Waswa decided to open a dreadlocks saloon.

The first year student at the University of Eldoret started working as a mere worker in a certain salon for more than four months. After gaining enough experience and skills, he perfected on then majoring on dreadlocks.

“I started working as a worker at a certain salon for about four months where I got my skills and later perfected in the dreadlocks field,” said Waswa.

According to Hakeem, starting the business was never easy. The major challenge was getting capital but after that, he started Hakeem and Micah Comrades Salon located at students market, Sogomo opposite Lapuzi bar. 

Currently, he faces difficulty to balance academics and business which also demands a lot of time.

However, he is always motivated by good friends and clients who love his magic hands when it comes to making dreadlocks. Hakeem said that the friends are always there to support him.

Through the business, he always gains the experience of dealing with clients and how to utilize his time fully when balancing between education and the saloon.

On a daily basis, he is able to make a minimum of Sh800 summing up to Sh24,000 monthly. On a good day, he can make more than Sh1,000. However, his earnings depend on his speed per client.
