For the first time in the history of Journalism in Gusii, The Kisii based journalists have come up together to form a self-help group which will create a strong bond among themselves socially and financially.
Speaking to Hivi Sasa on Wednesday evening, The Kisii Scribes, as they popularly call themselves, acting Chairman Mr Joshua Araka who is also the elected chairman of the GUMED SELF HELP GROUP said the purpose of the group is not only to bring solidarity among the scribes but also empower themselves financially.
"We also want to empower ourselves while empowering others with information. They say a carpenter does not have furniture in his house. We too must live a life reflecting our image out there. We hope to get help to open a resource centre that can benefit members and journalists," He said.
As the current acting Chairman of the Kisii scribes, Araka also said his greatest dream is seeing journalists united and acting as the mirror of the society in deeds.
"People should not take advantage of our divisions because media is really undergoing various challenges, capacity building is crucial so that members are up to date with information."
"Technology is our priority and also we focus on career progression, getting training and appearing in competitions. I have won some awards before, so we must nurture upcoming journalists," He added.
According to him so far they are about 40 Scribes but only 25 are in the self-help group and they are already doing monthly contributions.
"We are doing contributions monthly and we are approaching partners for support. We don't isolate non-members on issues which cut across e.g death," He said.
