Ford Kenya Party Leader Moses Wetangula has proposed that the nation should go for the referendum before the end of 2022, insisting that changes are necessary and inevitable.

Led by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the opposition block has been pushing for constitutional changes to among others, expand the executive arm of government.

Speaking in Siaya county on Friday, the Bungoma Senator said that this way, the nation will be able to push more funds to the devolved units and establish leadership inclusivity.

He said that Kenyans should only be asked to pick between the presidential and parliamentary systems, with the parliamentary one involving picking cabinet ministers from the Parliament.

"We should ask whether we want the country to be led through a presidential system or parliamentary system. My party already took a position on this.

"That we go the parliamentary system which is more responsive, accountable and more inclusive," he was quoted by the Standard.

He warned Kenyans against picking the current presidential type of governance which he said will continue subjecting them to their current woes, including a feeling of exclusion.

"We want a country where after elections the winner does not feel arrogant and the loser does not feel vulnerable. In other jurisdictions, the person who comes second remains relevant politically by being in Parliament or Senate to continue turning the wheel of politics and change in Kenya," added the lawmaker.

Raila has since claimed that a referendum was one of the factors that formed the basis of his 2018 truce with President Uhuru Kenyatta, with Uhuru to supporting the inclusion push.

Raila and his camp have also been pushing for an expansion of the executive arm of government to house more individuals, which he says will crush the winner-takes-it-all system.
