Government spokesperson Cyrus Oguna has said that the President Uhuru Kenyatta-led administration ordered the controversial Mau Forest evictions.
The retired colonel also revealed that squatters in the Aberdare and Mount Kenya forests would also be pushed out.
"Uhuru Kenyatta government ordered Mau evictions, squatters in Mt Kenya and Aberdare forests also to be pushed out," Cyrus Oguna said on Thursday during a media briefing.
His remarks come amid tensions over the Mau Forest evictions that have been ordered by the government through the Ministry of Environment under the stewardship of Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko.
The environment CS had said that the second phase of the evictions would proceed as planned and not even political intervention would stop them.
A section of Rift Valley leaders has been up in arms against the eviction plan, saying that it flies in the face of the Constitution.
Their call for dialogue with CS Tobiko is yet to be granted.
Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen warned that pushing out the more than 60,000 families living in the forest would result in a humanitarian catastrophe.
This week the squatters appeared to head to the government's directive to get out of the forest.
While the government has framed the eviction as a conservation issue, those against it have framed it in humanitarian and political terms.
